How much does a website cost in Sydney? (2026 prices)
By Jeffry, CF IT Solutions · Published 2 October 2026
A small business website in Sydney usually costs somewhere between $2,000 and $15,000 to build, and a Shopify store between $2,000 and $20,000. That's a huge range, so this guide breaks down what the different price points actually get you, what you'll pay every month after launch, and how to compare quotes without getting stung.
The figures below come from published 2026 pricing guides by Sydney and Australian web businesses (linked at the end), plus my own prices so you can see where a one person business sits against agencies.
Typical website prices in Sydney (2026)
| Type of site | Freelancer or small studio | Agency | Typical timeframe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brochure website (4 to 6 pages) | $2,800 to $5,000 | $5,000 to $10,000 | 3 to 6 weeks |
| Shopify store, theme based | $2,000 to $4,000 | $8,000 to $20,000 (10 to 50 products) | 2 to 8 weeks |
| WooCommerce store (20 to 50 products) | $9,000 to $11,000 | $12,500 and up | 8 to 14 weeks |
| Custom coded website | $3,500 and up | $10,000 and up | 4 to 12 weeks |
Sydney prices also run higher than most other Australian cities, mainly because of agency overheads. Offshore teams quote less again, often $1,500 to $6,000, but you trade away local contact, time zone overlap and someone accountable when things break.
What I charge, for comparison
| Type of site | From |
|---|---|
| Shopify store | $1,800 |
| WordPress website | $2,200 |
| WordPress and WooCommerce store | $3,500 |
| Custom website (React or Next.js) | $3,500 |
Every project gets a fixed quote after a short call. I can sit below agency prices because there's no account manager, sales team or office overhead in the middle. You deal with the person doing the work. See what's included in a build.
What pushes the price up
- Number of pages and products. Ten pages cost more than five. A store with 300 products takes far longer to set up than one with 20.
- Custom design. A good theme set up properly is much cheaper than a design built from scratch.
- Copywriting and photos. If the developer writes the words or organises photography, expect to pay more. Supplying your own content can take 20 to 30 percent off a quote.
- Integrations. Booking systems, inventory or accounting connections, membership areas and in store POS all add time.
- Moving an existing site. Migrating old content, keeping Google rankings with proper redirects, and moving email safely is real work that cheap quotes often leave out.
What you'll pay after launch
| Ongoing cost | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Shopify plan | From about $42 a month on annual billing ($56 monthly), plus payment fees |
| Hosting (WordPress or custom) | About $40 to $150 a month for decent business hosting |
| Domain name | Roughly $20 to $50 a year for a .com.au |
| Paid apps, plugins and themes | Varies. Some stores run $50 to $200 a month in apps |
| Maintenance and updates | Optional, but WordPress and WooCommerce need regular updates to stay secure |
Ask any developer to list these ongoing costs before you sign, so the cheap build doesn't turn into an expensive year.
How to compare website quotes
Two quotes with the same number on them can be for very different jobs. Before you choose, check each quote says:
- How many pages or products are included, and what extra ones cost
- Whether it's a theme or custom design, and how many rounds of changes you get
- Who writes the content and supplies the images
- Whether domain, hosting, SSL and business email setup are included
- Whether basic SEO is set up: page titles, descriptions, sitemap and Google Search Console
- That you'll own the site, the domain and the admin logins when it's done
- What support you get after launch, and what it costs
Red flags
- The developer registers your domain in their own name
- No written scope, just a single number
- A low build price tied to a long monthly contract you can't leave
- Promises of "page one on Google" as part of a website build
- No examples of real sites they've built that you can look at
So what should a small business budget?
For most Sydney small businesses, a well built brochure site or a theme based Shopify store from a local freelancer is the sweet spot: roughly $2,000 to $5,000, with a fixed quote and someone you can call. Agency builds make sense when you need a team, ongoing campaigns or a large custom project. If you're not sure which you need, a short call with a developer should tell you.
